Today we’re going to talk about chapped lips. What causes dry lips? How do you fix cracked lips? What is the worst thing you can do for chapped lips?

If you have chapped lips, the first thing you might do is reach for some lip balm or chapstick. But, that’s actually one of the worst things you can do for chapped lips.

This is because the ingredients in lip balm and chapstick often contain alcohol, solvents, or mineral oil that pulls oil out of the skin around your lips. This, of course, causes you to need more. So, there’s a cycle going on here. It’s the same with hand creams.

What causes chapped lips? — It’s a vitamin B2 deficiency.

B2 has one function of breaking down fats and making sure your skin is lubricated. If you’re low in B2 (riboflavin) you might experience:

• Dry lips
• Cracked corners of the mouth
• Fissures
• Candida

What foods contain B2:

• Eggs
• Leafy greens
• Nuts
• Dairy
• Meats
• Fish

What could cause a B2 vitamin deficiency?

• Taking birth control pills
• Eating a vegan diet
• Consuming refined foods

Consuming refined food is a big one. These foods will really deplete vitamin B2, especially refined grains and refined sugars.

How to get rid of chapped lips? — Healthy keto (ketogenic diet) and intermittent fasting will help with this situation by keeping you from being depleted of B vitamins.
